It was a recognition of the devastating impact of child sexual abuse on victim-survivors, their families and communities and a call to ensure that all children are safe and that every victim-survivor is heard, supported and believed.
Because child sexual abuse occurs across our communities, in all settings, including institutions, and, too often, within families. It is a national crisis that requires urgent action.
That’s why listening matters and why action must follow.
One year ago, the National Centre launched Voices for Action and asked victim-survivors what needs to change.
We wanted to understand what would make a real difference to prevent child sexual abuse, create safer environments for children and young people and ensure victim-survivors receive the recognition, support and opportunities for healing they deserve.
We were honoured and moved by the response. We received 84 submissions spanning written reflections, poetry, artwork, photography and music. Each contribution offered a unique perspective, sharing experiences of harm and its impacts, as well as stories of resilience, recovery and hope.
Together, these voices have helped illuminate what needs to change and where action is urgently needed. Today, we are proud to share the Voices for Action report, outlining five key themes and priorities for action.
These priorities are already shaping our work, including informing our submission on the Second Action Plan under the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse, our submission to the Inquiry into the National Redress Scheme and our advocacy for a dedicated Lifespan Supports Program.
Victim-survivors have shared their voices. Now we must act.
To everyone who made a submission: thank you.
