The Victorian Government has issued a formal apology to the First Peoples of Victoria, following the signing of Victoria’s Statewide Treaty.
The National Centre supports this historic step and calls for commitment and action toward Treaty-making at state, territory and national levels. While many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are thriving, too many continue to face ongoing challenges from colonisation and systemic racism – including an increased risk of child sexual abuse.
We stand alongside First Nations Peoples, recognising the historical and ongoing effects of colonisation and acknowledge that genuine systemic change – through truth-telling, Treaty-making and First Nations self-determination – is key to addressing unfinished business.
Today, we reflect on the work that still needs to be done and are committed to working alongside First Nations Peoples and communities, to ensure children and young people are protected from harm, and victims and survivors are supported to heal and thrive.
