SAYIT: Survivor-aware youth-informed tools for teaching sexual health education

This digital learning course is designed to support educators and facilitators to deliver trauma-informed, survivor-aware sexual health and relationship education (SHRE).

Sexual health and relationship education can be particularly challenging for young people who have experienced child sexual abuse, violence or trauma. The SAYIT approach focuses not just on what is taught, but how it is delivered, helping educators and facilitators create safer, more supportive and responsive learning experiences for all young people.

The course includes eight modules:

1. Introducing these guides and the SAYIT model
2. SAYIT Overview
3. Preparation for facilitation
4. Creating a SAYIT environment
5. Responding to concerns and disclosures
6. Pathways to support
7. Self-care is fundamental to SAYIT
8. Feedback, reflection and improvement

Each module is accompanied by downloadable practice tools, including checklists, reflection tools, planning templates, support and referral tools and resources educators can use in their own practice.

SAYIT brings together young survivors’ lived expertise and research evidence. Funded by the National Centre and co-designed by Australian Catholic University, Queensland University of Technology, NAPCAN, Marina Dickson Practice Connection and the project’s youth co-designers.
